Master of Sciences in Speech-Language Pathology
The Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology Program at PCUPR provides a comprehensive, humanistic and Christian education for the development of competent professionals in the field of communication and swallowing disorders. Graduate students of this program will be extensively prepared in the knowledge of the nature of these disorders, as well as the skills necessary for their evaluation and treatment, integrating research principles into evidence-based practice. We foster collaborative work with professionals allied to education and health, for the design of effective intervention programs, which consider the strengths and needs of human beings from a holistic perspective. Students will be prepared to practice their profession in Puerto Rico, United States of America and abroad.
This is a residential (on campus) program. The Graduate School of Education offers all its academic program courses in trimesters. The trimesters of study areas follows: Fall (August to October), Winter (November to February), and Spring (February to May). In addition, some courses are offered during summer session in June or July. Undergraduate courses (prerequisites) are offered in semester sessions.
- A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution, certified by means of an official transcript to be sent directly from the institution to the Office of Admissions of PCUPR.
- A minimum of 3.00 grade point average (GPA) on a four point (4.00) scale.
- Interview and essay
- Pass the following undergraduate courses with a minimum grade of C:

- Grammar or Linguistics (3 credits),
- Statistics (3 credits),
- Human Development (3 credits),
- Exceptional Child and Youngster (3 credits)
- Biological Sciences, Biology or Anatomy (3 credits),
- Physical Sciences, Physics or Chemistry (3 credits),
- Social or Behavioral Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology or Public Health) (3 credits),
- Foundations of Acoustics and Psychoacoustics (2 credits),
- Anatomy and Physiology of Speech Mechanism(3 credits),
- Typical Language Development (3 credits),
- Introduction to Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (1 cr).
- Two letters of recommendation indicative of the applicant's ability to pursue graduate studies (form will be provided).
- Possess the following personal qualities and technical skills (validated through interview and letters of recommendation)

- Proficiency in the Spanish language at an advanced level
- Proficiency in the English language at intermediate or advanced level
- Computer literacy
Note: An undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders or Speech Language Therapy is not required.
The mission of the Speech-Language Pathology Program from the PCUPR is to promote the life and dignity to individuals through a comprehensive, Christian, and humanistic education, through competent professionals in the field of speech and language disorders. This mission is accomplished through an interdisciplinary curriculum, based on the current scientific knowledge, that gives answers and solutions to cultural and linguistic diversity in Puerto Rican, Caribbean and global society.
The Program aims to prepare professionals in the field of speech-language pathology with the knowledge and skills for evaluation and intervention of individuals with communication and swallowing disorders, through dignified, sensible and humane treatment.
The Program has the following objectives:
- Provide comprehensive training for speech and language pathologists covering fundamental knowledge of the profession and the ethical-Christian principles.
- Prepare speech and language specialists with the professional skills needed to serve diverse populations with communication disorders.
- Promote in students a research culture and the use of evidence-based practices.
- Contribute to the development of research in the field of communication and swallowing disorders.
- Train in the use of advanced technology and techniques for the assessment and intervention of communication and swallowing disorders.
- Prepare professionals who can communicate information effectively and efficiently.
- Encourage collaborative work with other professionals for effective case management skills.

The Master of Sciences in Speech-Language Pathology (MS), residential, at Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico is a Candidate for Accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700. Candidacy is a “preaccreditation” status with the CAA, awarded to developing or emerging programs for a maximum period of 5 years.
